Latest highlights from the AWES group

This section showcases recent milestones from our research activities in Airborne Wind Energy Systems, including flight campaigns, experimental validation, scientific publications, outreach activities, and collaborations.

Use these featured milestones to follow the progress of the group, from hardware development and control testing to new results shared with the wider research community.

First ever off-grid energy generation using AWES in Spain

On 21 April 2026, our team achieved a historic breakthrough: the first off-grid electricity generation from an Airborne Wind Energy System in Spain. The milestone was reached with our 20 kW demonstrator, combining a leading-edge inflatable (LEI) kite with our proprietary electrical conversion technology.

This accomplishment represents a landmark moment for renewable energy innovation in Spain and opens the way for the future deployment of airborne wind energy technologies in the country.

Flight campaign milestone

During the last flight campaing, our team retrieved several hours worth of data from continuous, uninterrupted operation. The wind speeds meassured had an average magnitude of 5 m/s going as low as 1 m/s.

This flight conditions, of extremely low wind conditions, are perfect to test our system, and serves as proof that AWES can operate at wind conditions where conventional wind could not.
